Sandbar State Park - Northwest Day 9-18-09

A pretty decent NW day at Sandbar State Park. The gate was open, Port-a-potty were still there and there was actual wind. The wind line came in once the clouds past and I rigged a 4.8 sail on my JP 85 ltr FSW board. Of course it was up and down, but we sailed. It has been a while and since there has not been any south wind days, you have to make due. Here is the graph.

  1. Brian,

I'm glad to hear that you got wind today. On Mascoma we had more modest but consistent conditions and overall good day. I was on 7.5 and my only 130L again. Had fun from 11 to 4 pm. There were many sail boats: Dartmoth had the team practicing and SVSC had the laser regatta. Looked pretty, also given the fact that there were no motor boats. Today I got to meet Carl, who was on 9.0 (wow!) He knows you too.

  2. Great news to heard the crew is out showing the love for the sport. Carl has been sailing for years, I'm glad to heard someone got the wind. Did you sail Saturday? Steve sail (and slogged) at soonippi at lunch time.

  3. Yes, we were sailing on Saturday 19th, I didn't realize until now that your post was about Friday 18th. I bet Friday was good on Mascoma too. If I were not babysitting my son, who had cold that day, I would be at work anyway. It was painful to watch through the window how trees sway.
I have never tried Soonippi, just stopped by with the family once and figured out that family is not supposed to stay there while I'm sailing. Blodgett landing is even less convenient.

  4. Hi Andrei:
Soonippi park is a boat launch only! Do not hangout on the beach. The owner of the house will hassle you about parking, launching and hanging out, even though he has no right.
Please kept him happy. One of the best (and only)launches for SW and W winds in our area.
The wind can be very strong (5.4 thru 4.2) is not uncommon. West wind is light in the middle where you launch and you will be lit on the two sides. You will need about 4 tacks to get up wind away from the buoys, lots of rocks near shore but most are marked.
